Calling All Ecosystems: The Inspiring and Accurate Science Fiction of Rachel Carson's Under the Sea-Wind

Description: Richard King, a scholar of literature of the sea and a visiting writer at Kresge College, introduces the historical and literary context of Rachel Carson's sea trilogy, which began with her first and most fictional work, Under the Sea-Wind. Her book-length experiment, although now overshadowed by Silent Spring, is both a true literary masterpiece and was a bestseller in the 1950s. In Under the Sea-Wind Carson carefully, subtly synthesized all known marine ecology and oceanography into a work of "science fiction" for a broad audience. Under the Sea-Wind remains a model today for science and nature writers. There will be time for discussion, and no previous familiarity with Carson and her books is necessary.
