Master Class: Business and the Low-Carbon Economy Seniors: Build your understanding of how business innovates in the new green economy

CLEI 199F-01 -- 2-units (email sawalsh@ucsc.edu for permission number) Thursdays, 6:00-7:45pm, College Eight 301. Enrollment limited to 15

Instruction will be through weekly seminars.

Students will be expected to work in small groups and conduct research in topics identified by the instructors and be prepared to present and discuss their work (weekly) during the seminars.

Students must…

  • have strong self-initiative
  • be capable of working effectively in groups
  • demonstrate strong curiosity and original thinking in conducting research
  • be prepared to work hard in a demanding course

Through this course, students will learn how businesses can create shared value in terms of financial, environmental and social benefits, become familiar with companies that are doing so, and identify how they can position their own careers for the new business skills that will be demanded in the low-carbon economy of tomorrow.

Ram Nidumolu, Founder and CEO of InnovaStrat, Inc. Ram has more than 20 years of experience in strategy and execution consulting and research with enterprises. He is currently the founder and CEO of InnovaStrat, Inc., an innovation and strategy research and advisory services firm that founded the Low Carbon Enterprise initiative. He was previously the research director of the Corporate Eco Forum, an organization consisting of 75 of the world’s largest Global 500 corporations. Ram conducted groundbreaking research on the next practices related to sustainability, innovation and business strategy among the leading innovators in the world. He was previously the founder and CEO of a software services startup in Silicon Valley that provided CRM solutions to the high tech industry. Ram was also a faculty member at the business schools of leading US universities for almost a decade. He received his Ph.D. in Management at the Anderson Business School at UCLA. Kevin Bell, Chief Analyst, Founder and CEO of Converger Research Kevin Bell has over thirty years experience in energy resource policy and energy-related innovation, working in a staff and consulting capacity in the public, private, and non-profit sectors as a researcher, regulator, and advocate of next-generation energy technologies. His expertise includes the design and implementation of energy and carbon models and public policies for enabling the low-carbon economy. He is the former CEO of a successful venture that developed a new generation of educational tools and technologies for teaching science. He received his Masters in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He can be reached at kevinbell@converger.com.


Kathy Kelly, Vice President, Services of InnovaStrat, Inc. Kathy brings over twenty five years of experience to program management, group collaboration and cross-cultural coordination. Her expertise includes the business leverage of real-time collaboration technologies by enterprises in the low-carbon economy. She was previously the co-founder and principal at Productive Teamwork, International, a consulting group that specializes in group collaboration processes and technologies. Prior experience includes Gartner, Inc, the leading technology research firm in the world, where she managed Best Practices groups for Fortune 500 executives.
