The exam will be given Saturday, November 19, 2011 10:30-12:30. Location TBA (for College 8, Media Theater M110). You do not need to bring anything except something to write with. An English dictionary will be available. No other dictionaries or electronic devices are permitted.

Appeal Process:

First, off you should decide whether it's a good idea to appeal. Writing 20 may be your best option; it's specifically designed for people lucky enough to speak multiple languages, and will work on other skills as well, like organization and development. There are no books and the papers are short, so it will leave you time for your other classes. The worst possible outcome is to barely pass ELWR, struggle in Writing 2 and then get low grades in all the other courses that involve writing. When you get into upper division classes, Scantron bubble tests will disappear and essay exams and term papers become much more common, so you want to get all the writing training you can get. After Wr 2, there's only one writing class, and it is not taught by writing teachers, so how much instruction you get is going to vary wildly. If you are not sure, discuss the decision with your instructor (some may not have access to email at times during the break, but it's worth a try).

If you decide to appeal, you must submit a clean copy of two papers from the Core course, along with the originals with your instructor's comments. Your instructor will tell you the deadline, but it will be not later than morning of Tues 12/1, right after Thanksgiving break. The papers must draw upon a reading. You can revise these papers as much as you like, and work with someone else, but you cannot have someone revise the paper for you. Give these papers in a envelope or folder with pockets to your instructor. On the front clearly write your name, your instructor's name, your college, and your student ID number. Appeal results may be available late Thurs 12/1 or early Friday. Writing 2 enrollment will re-open Friday 12/2/10 at 2 pm. Writing 20 will reopen at NOON. More Info on appeal procedure.

Winter Enrollment

A number of seats in each Writing 2 class are held in reserve until after the results of the Nov. 19 Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE), and exam appeals, have been recorded. Scores for the November AWPE should be available on your MyUCSC portal after 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 23.

If you do not receive a passing score on the November AWPE, you should submit your appeal packet to your Core instructor on the day they specify ( Monday or Tues after Thanksgiving Nov. 28-29. Results for the appeal should be available on your MyUCSC portal by 5:00 p.m., Thursday.

If you satisfy the ELWR by exam or by portfolio packet appeal, you should try to enroll in Writing 2 after 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2. These classes fill quickly, so you should enroll in a back-up class during your regular enrollment appointments in case you are not able to secure a space in Writing 2 in winter 2010. (It is offered again in spring 2011).

IF YOU HAVE NOT SATISFIED THE ELWR BY THE END OF FALL QUARTER:

You must enroll in Writing 20 in winter 2011. Writing 20 is designed to help you with your academic writing. Writing 20 students will produce a portfolio of papers to submit for satisfaction of the ELWR at the end of winter quarter. All seats for Writing 20 classes will open for enrollment to first-year students beginning at noon on Friday, December 2, 2011.

Specific Guidelines for appealing the ELWR exam:

1. In order to appeal the ELWR exam results, students should choose two papers from their core course assignments, in our case the two integrative papers.

2. Students appealing their ELWR exam results must turn in a packet containing TWO papers from their core course, each one with TWO drafts. One of those drafts MUST have the instructor's comments. The clean copy can be revised. Students can then staple the clean draft to the one with the teacher's comments.

The student should then put all of this work in an envelope or a folder with pockets that will keep the work together; paper clips do not work: the packets come apart and readers are then left to sort through the papers to match them with the right student. Folders without pockets tend to lose papers that slip out. You also need to submit a cover letter; see the instructions above.

The student's name, student ID number, college and instructor's name should go on the front of the packet.

Writing 22A is a 3-unit class which offers instruction on selected topics in grammar and conventions of written English as needed to strengthen the writing skills of students whose primary language is not standard English. The course provides students practice in applying these concepts to editing their own writing (that is, you typically work on papers from your other classes, as opposed to writing new ones). Designed for entering first-year students, enrollment limited to 22. You can go to any section; if there's not room, they can tell you if another section has any. These fill up quickly, so don't delay.
