Project 1: Harvest for Health
 
Led by the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS)
 
Mondays, 10:00 am-12:30 pm, beginning October 12
 
Take part in the sustainable food system loop by visiting the UCSC Farm/Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems in groups of ten to work in the farm fields with a farm coordinator. Learn about the history of the space and the organic and ecological practices, and harvest produce for the College Eight Dining Hall. Project 2: Harvest for Hunger
 
Led by the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS)
 
Thursdays 10:00 am-12:30 pm  beginning October 15th, 2009
 
Visit the UCSC Farm/Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems in groups of ten to work in the farm fields. After an orientation that examines the history of the space and the organic and ecological practices The Farm uses as well as issues involving food security and hunger, you’ll harvest produce for the California Grey Bears, an organization that feeds seniors in the Santa Cruz community. Project 3: Foundational Roots with PICA

Visit the Sustainable Living Center at PICA in the UCSC Village. The Program in Community and Agroecology (PICA) is a unique collaboration that engages students with critical issues in the development of sustainable food systems and sustainable communities through academic coursework, community-based activities and gardening. Projects at the Sustainable Living Center include ecological landscaping, greenhouse propagation and composting. In the Foundational Roots Garden, you’ll learn about and help with planting, watering, weeding, digging beds, cover cropping—and of course harvesting. Students are invited to stay for PICA’s community lunch after the garden workday at 1 pm. For more information about PICA, see http://ucscpica.org/.
