National Park Service internships provide learning opportunities through activities such as wilderness re-vegetation, assistance with preservation and restoration projects, water quality monitoring, surveying, educational cave tours, or assisting resource management staff. Internships offer an interesting and educational experience in some of the most beautiful areas of the country. Many parks offer opportunities for internships. A centralized list of internships, however, is not available. If you are looking for an internship in a park, the National Park Service suggests that you select one or more parks that interest you and contact them directly. Specific Internships
Global Information Internship Program (GIIP) is working with the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the UCDC program. WRI is an environmental think tank based in Washington, D.C., that focuses on objective research and analysis to produce real solutions to environmental and human problems. The UCDC program provides housing and credits for UC students to live for a school quarter in Washington, D.C. and intern with a governmental or non-governmental organization. City on a Hill story.

Yosemite Summer internships: Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): Funded by the National Science Foundation, the REU program provides opportunities for undergraduates (recruited nationwide) to conduct independent research projects under the combined mentoring of UC Merced professors, United States Geological Survey scientists and Yosemite National Park scientists. These research projects then serve as a catalyst for collaborative research between the university and the park. The REU program uses its research opportunities to complement the non-science internships in the YLP program.
SNRI Scientific Visualization Fellowship (SciViz): This program focuses on a combination of science and art, providing two fellows (recruited nationwide) with three months of free housing in Yosemite and a $1,500 stipend to enhance the creative visualization and communication of scientific information. Last year, one scientific illustrator worked with scientists and park staff to create visitor displays along Tioga Pass Road, while a musician created wilderness soundscape compositions using recordings from Yosemite’s meadows.
Project for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (PIE) The Project for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (PIE), based at 605 Front Street is a collaboration between the City of Santa Cruz and UCSC designed to support a culture of entrepreneurship by placing select student interns into high tech and green tech startups to work on specific projects. The project has one specific goal: to keep UCSC talent here in Santa Cruz. To accomplish this goal the PIE works to place interns into select business and also functions as a business incubator for student businesses.
The businesses range from technical and web development, to business and marketing. In the past we have found that students get an experience in a range of functions. These internships are unique in that they:
- Require significant time dedication in a real work environment
- Give you the opportunity to help build a business
- Give you the opportunity to work directly with founders/management
After your internship, we encourage you to discuss with your employer any future opportunities. Also, utilize your employer to network and explore other career opportunities available to you. The staff at the PIE will happily look over your resume as well so that you can leverage this opportunity in full. To reinforce the lessons learned on the job, the program also features a weekly speakers series on Fridays in the Front Street office featuring C-level executives and founders speaking on topics like scaling & exit strategies, resource & software development, funding, financing, community building and strategy. Attendance for interns is required. The speaker series is every Friday at 9:30 am at the PIE. 605 Front Street, Downtown Santa Cruz (across the street from CVS pharmacy).
